Getting pills

Do you need a prescription for birth control pills in the Philippines?

Editorially reviewed on October 29, 2026. [TODO: medical reviewer]

Quick answer

Yes. Every pill brand is a prescription medicine under RA 10918, and every major pharmacy listing marks them "prescription required".[src][src] A valid reseta (Prescription. All birth control pills need one in the Philippines.) shows the doctor's name, PRC licence number and signature. Online pharmacies accept a photo or PDF, but some still ask to see the original.

Our prescription guide explains the law and the 2024 crackdown. This page answers the next question Filipinas ask: once you have a reseta, what does the pharmacist actually check?

What makes a prescription valid

The FDA's rules for electronic prescriptions list what a doctor's prescription must carry, and pharmacists look for the same details on paper ones:[src]

  • The doctor's full name and signature (or e-signature).
  • The doctor's PRC licence number and PTR number.
  • Your name and the date.
  • The medicine, ideally by generic name with the brand, for example "levonorgestrel + ethinylestradiol (Trust)", and how many packs.

A prescription that says "birth control pills" with no product named is often refused. So is a photo where the licence number is cut off.

Do e-prescriptions count?

During the pandemic, DOH and the National Privacy Commission set telemedicine rules, and FDA Circular 2020-037 told pharmacies to accept e-prescriptions as PDF or JPEG files with the doctor's e-signature, name, PRC licence and PTR.[src][src] That circular had an end date in 2021, and we could not find a newer national rule that makes e-prescriptions permanent for every medicine. [TODO: source: current FDA or DOH rule on e-prescription validity for non-dangerous drugs] In practice in 2026, the big chains still accept uploaded images, and teleconsult doctors issue them every day. Birth control pills are not "dangerous drugs", so the stricter paper rules for those do not apply.

Only FDA-licensed drugstores with a physical outlet may take online orders, and the FDA keeps a public list you can check.[src] Marketplace sellers are not on it.

Tips so your reseta is not refused

  • Ask the doctor to write enough packs for several months, so you are not back every month.
  • Keep a clear photo on your phone and the original in your wallet.
  • If your usual brand is out of stock, a pharmacist cannot swap you to a different formula. Ask your doctor about a same-formula brand in advance.
  • A teleconsult with an OB-GYN costs from ₱700, or you can skip the pharmacy and get pills free at a barangay health center.

Frequently asked questions

Kailangan ba ng reseta para sa pills?

Oo. Lahat ng pills sa Pilipinas ay prescription medicine. Puwedeng kumuha ng reseta sa doktor (personal o online), o kumuha ng libreng pills sa barangay health center.

Does a screenshot of a teleconsult prescription work?

Most online pharmacies accept a clear photo or PDF that shows the doctor's name, PRC licence number, PTR and signature. Some still ask to see the original on delivery or pickup, so keep it.

How long is a prescription for pills valid?

There is no single national validity period we could confirm. Many pharmacies honour a prescription for the number of packs written on it. Ask your doctor to write the quantity clearly.
