Pregnancy tests in the Philippines: when to test and what it costs

Editorially reviewed on October 29, 2026. [TODO: medical reviewer]

Quick answer

A home pregnancy test is most reliable from the first day your period is due. If you do not know when that is, the NHS says to test at least 21 days after the last time you had unprotected sex. Tests need no prescription and cost about ₱64.75 at Watsons; health centers can also test you.

When to take a pregnancy test

Home tests detect the pregnancy hormone hCG in your urine. The NHS says you can take a test from the first day of a missed period, and if you do not know when your period is due, at least 21 days after you last had unprotected sex [src]. Some sensitive tests work a few days earlier, but testing early raises the chance of a false negative.

Not sure what date to use? The when to take a pregnancy test tool works it out from your last period or the date of sex.

Had unprotected sex in the last 5 days?

Do not wait for a test date. A copper IUD fitted within 5 days is the most effective emergency option [src]. Talk to a doctor today, and see emergency contraception.

Testing while on birth control

Hormonal birth control does not affect the result of a pregnancy test. On the pill, a light or missing bleed in the break week is common [src]. If you took every pill correctly, pregnancy is unlikely; if you missed pills or miss two bleeds in a row, take a test. See no period on the pill and the late period on the pill tool.

On the implant, injectable or hormonal IUD, no period is often normal. Test if you have pregnancy symptoms or you are worried.

How to take a home test

  1. Check the expiry date and read the leaflet; brands differ.
  2. Use your first urine of the morning if you are testing early, since it is the most concentrated [src].
  3. Dip the strip or hold the stick in the stream for the time stated, or use the dropper on a cassette test.
  4. Lay it flat and wait the stated time before reading. Do not read it much later.

Reading the result

  • Two lines (even faint): usually positive [src]. Confirm with a repeat test or a doctor.
  • One line in the control window: negative. If your period still does not come, test again in a few days.
  • No control line: the test did not work. Use a new one.

Where to get a test

  • Pharmacies: no prescription needed. A Trust Clear Check test costs about ₱64.75 at Watsons. Prices checked October 2026.
  • Health centers: barangay health centers and RHUs can test you and talk through your options. Family planning services there are free [src].
  • Clinics and labs: a blood test can detect pregnancy earlier and measure hCG levels, if a doctor requests it.

What next

Positive: stop any hormonal birth control and see a doctor or your health center for prenatal care. If you have one-sided belly pain, heavy bleeding or feel faint, go to the ER, since these can be signs of a pregnancy outside the womb.

Negative and you do not want to be pregnant: it is a good moment to choose a method that fits you. Try the find my method quiz, or get methods free at your health center.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pregnancy test be wrong?

A positive result is very likely correct. A negative result can be wrong if you test too early or your urine is diluted. If your period still does not come, test again a few days later.
