Your needs
Birth control for lighter, less painful periods
Quick answer
If heavy or painful periods are your main concern, the hormonal IUD usually makes periods much lighter, and combined pills usually make them lighter, more regular and less painful. The injectable and implant often reduce bleeding but can be unpredictable. The copper IUD can make periods heavier, so it is usually not the first choice for heavy bleeding.
Method families to discuss
- Hormonal IUD: after some early spotting, periods usually get much lighter, and some people stop bleeding [src]. Mostly available at private clinics, from ₱18,000.
- Combined pills: usually lighter, more regular bleeds and less cramping [src]. Common low-cost options include Lady (levonorgestrel + ethinylestradiol) and Trust (levonorgestrel + ethinylestradiol). Ask your doctor whether running packs back to back is an option for you.
- Injectable: many people have no period after a few shots, but the first months can bring irregular bleeding [src].
- Implant: bleeding may become less, stop, or become irregular. It is hard to predict [src].
What may not suit you
The copper IUD often makes periods heavier and crampier, especially in the first months [src]. If you already have heavy periods or anemia, tell your provider before choosing it.
Get very heavy periods checked
See a doctor if
You soak through pads very quickly, pass large clots, feel dizzy or tired all the time, or your periods suddenly change. Heavy bleeding can cause anemia and sometimes has a cause that needs treatment, such as fibroids.
Track your periods in the side effect tracker to show your doctor.
